Bright career beacons qualified optometrists

Importance of Eye for mankind

The human being is endowed with a lovely sensory organ called EYE through which a person is able to see the world and transmit the signals to the brain that helps in visualising the events and activities around us. Eye is a delicate organ and needs to be handled carefully to ensure its satisfactory functioning during life time and beyond (through eye donation). While all sensory organs have their immense functional values, arguably most aesthetic appeal is that of the eyes.

Of late, awareness about the possibility of saving the eyes, rather than surrendering to any eye disease as fait accompli, has increased manifold through organization of  eye treatment  camps in large no. of villages/towns/cities  and other steps taken by the Govt.

Rationale for studying optometry

Deft handling of a delicate organ like eye needs expertise that comes from extensive knowledge about functioning of the eyes. Such knowledge is acquired by optometrists while pursuing a course in optometry.

According to a survey made in 2017, more than 80 lakhs Indians are blind. Around 75% of these cases of blindness can be avoided. Unfortunately, acute shortage of optometrists is not helping the cause.

The survey also reveals that there is requirement of over two lakhs of qualified optometrists in India as against current availability of around 8,000.

This huge gap between demand & supply augurs well for those studying the course as their employment after completion of the course is absolutely certain.

With steady increase in population and increase in average life span, the demand for optometrists is very high and is expected to rise further in the coming years.. Given the present scenario, every optometrist is expected to be decently employed immediately after passing out.

In view of the above, pursuing a degree course in optometry is definitely an option worth considering for a bright future.
